Review
ElevenLabs review: you buy credits, not minutes
Credit-based voice AI with a free plan; commercial use starts at Starter, $6 a month.
Best for: Creators and small teams who need AI voiceover they are allowed to publish.
Free, then from $6/mo (Creator $22/mo) See ElevenLabs plans
Voice AI pricing is confusing because you do not buy minutes of audio, you buy credits, and different tools spend them at different rates. ElevenLabs sells monthly credit bundles, from 10,000 on the free plan to 6 million on Business. What actually decides your plan is less how much audio you make than what you are allowed to do with it: publish it commercially, clone a voice, or pull high-quality audio through the API. This review is built from ElevenLabs' own pricing page, read in October 2026. We have not generated audio on a paid plan.
Who this is for
- YouTubers and podcasters who want AI voiceover they can legally publish on monetised channels
- Small teams who need a cloned voice for consistent narration
- Developers who want text to speech through an API, with audio quality that depends on the plan

What is good, and what is not
Good
- There is a real free plan — 10,000 credits a month — so you can hear whether the voice fits your content before paying.
- The first paid step is cheap: Starter at $6 a month adds the commercial licence and instant voice cloning.
- Creator at $22 adds professional voice cloning, the cheapest way into it on the pricing page.
- One subscription covers text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design, music and dubbing, so you are not paying for each as a separate tool.
Not so good
- You buy credits, not minutes, and the page does not give one fixed conversion because each product spends credits differently. — estimate your usage with ElevenLabs' own calculator and its credits FAQ before choosing a plan.
- Commercial use is paywalled. The pricing page lists the commercial licence as starting at Starter, not on the free plan. — this matters if you publish monetised videos or sell the audio.
- Moving up the plans does not buy a cheaper rate. On standard monthly prices you get about 5,500 credits per dollar on Creator and about 6,060 on Pro. — the higher plans are for quality, seats and cloning, not bulk discounts, so only upgrade for a feature you need.
- Some prices are promotions. Starter's $1 first month and Creator's $11 first month are introductory; the standard prices are $6 and $22. — check what the page shows on the day you buy.
The verdict
ElevenLabs makes sense if you need voice you can publish: Starter at $6 a month is the entry point for commercial use, and Creator at $22 adds professional voice cloning. Two things to keep in mind: credits are not minutes, so test your real script on the free plan first, and the higher plans do not lower the price per credit — about 5,500 credits per dollar on Creator against about 6,060 on Pro — so upgrade only for a feature or extra seats. Start on the free plan to hear whether the voice suits your content, and if it does, Starter at $6 is the cheapest way to publish with it.
If it is not the right fit
No single product suits everyone. If the drawbacks above rule it out for you, these are where we would look next — including options that earn us nothing:
| Option | From | Better if |
|---|---|---|
| Murf AI | API from $0.03 per 1,000 characters (pay as you go) | Studio-quality speech through a pay-as-you-go API; its pricing page also shows $10 of free credit |
| Speechify | — | Reading text aloud for listening, which is what Speechify is mainly known for |
| Your computer's built-in text to speech | Free | Drafts and checking a script's flow, where voice quality does not matter — and it earns us nothing |
