Review
Writesonic review: it stopped being a writing tool
No longer the cheap AI writer people remember — it is now an AI-search visibility platform priced from $79 a month, and the article allowance is a side feature.
Best for: Brands who want to track how they appear in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and have a budget for it
From $79 a month, or $948 a year See Writesonic pricing
If you last looked at Writesonic a couple of years ago, the thing you remember — a cheap tool that turned a prompt into blog copy — is not what is on sale now. The product has moved. What you buy today is built around tracking how your brand shows up inside AI answers: how many prompts it appears in on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, how that changes, and what the sentiment looks like. Article generation is still in there, but it arrives as a monthly allowance — 15 on the entry plan — rather than the point of the subscription. That repositioning matters more than any feature comparison, because it changes who this is sensible for.
Who this is for
- Brands and agencies who need to know whether they appear in AI answers, and are treating that as a measurable channel
- Teams with a real budget — the entry plan is $79 a month and the useful tiers sit well above it
- Anyone who just wants help drafting articles should look elsewhere; 15 articles a month at $79 is not what this is priced for

What is good, and what is not
Good
- AI search visibility tracking is a genuinely new category, and few tools report it in this much detail.
- Site audits are included at every tier rather than sold as an add-on, and the page counts are generous above Starter.
- A free trial with no card required, which is the right way to find out whether your brand appears in AI answers at all.
- Yearly billing takes a meaningful amount off — $240 on Starter, $1,200 on Growth.
Not so good
- The entry price has moved a long way. $79 a month is no longer competitive as a writing tool, and it is not sold as one.
- Only 3 AI platforms are tracked below Enterprise. Perplexity, Claude and the rest require a custom quote.
- One user and one project on Starter, which rules out agencies at the entry tier.
- Extra users cost $50 a month each, so a three-person team on Basic is paying $249 billed annually or $299 billed monthly.
- Agentic workflows are capped at trial runs on every published plan — 10, 50, 100 — so the automation is a demo until Enterprise.
- No permanent free tier, only a trial, so there is no way to keep a light account open between projects.
The verdict
Decide first whether you are buying AI search visibility or article writing, because this is now firmly the former. If your brand's presence inside ChatGPT and Google AI answers is something you are being asked to report on, $79 a month (billed annually, $99 if you pay monthly) to start measuring it is defensible, and the trial will tell you within a week whether you appear at all. If you came here for help writing blog posts, the arithmetic is poor — 15 articles a month at $79 (the annual-billing price) works out at over $5 an article for drafts that still need rewriting, and tools built for that job cost a third as much. The Starter plan's single user and single project is the other thing to check before committing: it rules out most agency use entirely.
If it is not the right fit
No single product suits everyone. If the drawbacks above rule it out for you, these are where we would look next — including options that earn us nothing:
| Option | From | Better if |
|---|---|---|
| Frase | From $39 a month | People whose actual need is content briefs and on-page optimisation, at half the entry price |
| Semrush | From $139 a month | Teams who want AI visibility alongside a full conventional SEO toolkit rather than on its own |
| Rytr | — | Anyone who only wanted the cheap AI writing that Writesonic used to be |
