Frase review: what $39 a month actually buys you

A solid SEO brief and content-optimisation tool whose cheapest plan is capped tightly enough that the cap, not the features, decides whether it fits you.

Best for: One person running one site who publishes roughly two to three optimised articles a week

From $39 a month billed yearly, or $49 month to month See Frase pricing

Frase sits in the crowded middle of SEO content tools: you give it a keyword, it reads the pages currently ranking, and it hands back a brief telling you what those pages cover so your draft does not miss anything obvious. That part is unremarkable now — several tools do it. What makes Frase a real decision rather than a default is the way the plans are drawn. The entry plan is not a limited version of the big one; it is a hard cap of ten articles a month on a single site, with one seat. If your publishing rhythm sits under that line, the cheapest plan is genuinely all you need. If it sits above, the next step up is not a small one.

What is good, and what is not

Good

  • The entry plan is a real plan, not a crippled demo — it publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, and includes the scoring, on the cheapest tier.
  • Starter stops at its limits instead of billing overages, so the monthly cost cannot surprise you.
  • A 7-day free trial with no card required, which is enough to put your own keywords through it before paying anything.
  • Visibility checks now cover ChatGPT and Google AI on the entry plan, which is where a growing share of search traffic is going.

Not so good

  • Ten articles a month on Starter is a hard ceiling. Two posts a week plus a couple of rewrites and you are at it.
  • One seat and one site on Starter rules out anyone writing for clients, or any two-person team sharing an account.
  • The jump from Starter to Professional is $64 a month on the yearly plans — a 2.6x increase for the second site.
  • Paying month to month costs around $120 a year more on Starter alone, so the advertised price assumes a year's commitment.
  • The AI drafting produces text that still needs a full rewrite. Treat it as a research tool that happens to draft, not a writing tool.
  • Audit pages and Content Guard pages are separate counters from articles, and it is easy to hit one while the other has room left.

The verdict

Work out how many optimised articles you genuinely publish in a month before you look at the feature list, because that number decides this for you. Under ten, on one site, on your own: Starter at $39 billed yearly is reasonable, and the fact that it holds at its limits instead of billing overages is worth something. Above ten, or on a second site, or sharing with anyone: you are looking at $103 a month, and at that price the comparison widens considerably. Use the 7-day trial on your own keywords rather than a demo topic — a brief looks impressive until you run it against a subject you already know well.

If it is not the right fit

No single product suits everyone. If the drawbacks above rule it out for you, these are where we would look next — including options that earn us nothing:

OptionFromBetter if
Surfer SEO — People who want the content score baked into the editor and do not mind a steeper price
NeuronWriter — The cheapest realistic alternative if the brief is all you actually want
Clearscope — Teams with budget who want the most polished reporting of the three

Questions people ask

Is there a free plan?

No. There is a 7-day free trial that does not ask for a card, but no permanent free tier.

What counts as an article?

Each article you generate or optimise draws from the monthly allowance — 10 on Starter, 40 on Professional, 100 on Scale. Page audits and Content Guard monitoring are counted separately.

What happens if I run out mid-month?

On Starter you simply stop until the month resets, which is why the bill cannot run away from you. Professional and Scale let you opt into pay-as-you-go overages instead.

Can I use it for client sites?

Not on Starter, which is locked to one seat and one site. Professional covers 5 sites and 3 seats, with extra seats at $29 a month.
