Decktopus review: fast AI slide decks, and the design ceiling you will hit

By Kim Quyen · Last updated 11 September 2026

A presentable deck from a one-line prompt in about a minute — $9.99 a month on the annual plan.

Best for: Anyone who needs a deck today, has no designer, and will finish the polish in PowerPoint.

From $9.99/mo billed yearly See Decktopus plans

Decktopus turns a prompt into a finished-looking slide deck in about a minute, then lets you export to PDF, PPT or PNG. It is genuinely fast. The question worth answering before you subscribe is whether you can live inside its templates, because deep design control is the thing it deliberately does not give you.

What is good, and what is not

Good

  • Speed is the real product: a usable deck from a one-line prompt in about a minute, which is the difference between presenting tomorrow and not.
  • Exports to PDF, PPT and PNG, so you are not trapped — you can finish the polish in PowerPoint or Keynote.
  • 750 credits covers roughly 150 slides a month on Pro, which is more than most people make in a year.
  • At $9.99 a month on the annual plan it is cheaper than an hour of a freelance designer's time.

Not so good

  • There is no free plan, and reviewers say you see too little before the paywall. — the annual plan at $9.99 a month is the cheapest way in if you decide to try it.
  • Monthly billing is $24.99 against $9.99 annually — two and a half times more. — easy to avoid: pick the annual term and you are paying the advertised price, saving $180 a year.
  • Customisation stops sooner than you expect — no deep control over layouts, animations or brand colours on Pro. — fine if you are exporting to PowerPoint to finish; limiting if the deck must look bespoke inside the tool.
  • The AI writing is generic, and some reviewers report it degrades with longer prompts. — treat the output as a structured first draft you rewrite, which is still faster than starting blank.
  • Brand Kit, custom domain and analytics sit on the Business plan, whose price is not published. — you have to ask, so budget for that if brand consistency is the point.
  • Support and refund handling come up repeatedly in negative reviews. — worth weighing against the annual commitment before choosing the yearly term.

The verdict

If a deck stands between you and a deadline, this turns a one-line prompt into something presentable in about a minute, and $9.99 a month on the annual plan is less than an hour of a freelance designer. Take the annual term — that one choice saves $180 a year against monthly, for exactly the same product — and plan to export to PowerPoint and rewrite the words. Used that way it buys back an afternoon every time you need slides, which is the whole point.

If it is not the right fit

No single product suits everyone. If the drawbacks above rule it out for you, these are where we would look next — including options that earn us nothing:

OptionFromBetter if
Gamma A free tier to test the same idea before committing money to any of them
Canva People who want real design control and already have the subscription for other work
Beautiful.ai Teams who need consistent brand slides more than they need speed

Questions people ask

Is there a free version?

No free plan is listed on the pricing page. Reviewers commonly complain about how little you can see before paying.

How many slides do 750 credits make?

Decktopus quotes roughly 150 slides a month from the Pro plan's 750 credits. You can top up credits mid-month if you run out.

Why are there three different Pro prices?

They are billing terms, not tiers: $9.99/month billed yearly, $19.99/month billed quarterly, $24.99/month billed monthly. The features are the same.

Can I use my own brand colours and fonts?

The Brand Kit sits on the Business plan, whose price is not published. On Pro, customisation of layouts, animations and colours is limited.
